Maintenance is Needed

Sausalito prides itself on its beauty, but have you taken a good look at Bridgeway lately? The stretch between Princess and Richardson is looking pretty rough.

“Alligator cracks” such as the ones illustrated above on Bridgeway often indicate that the road's structural integrity has been compromised.

According to the City of Sausalito’s 2022 Pavement Management Program Update, the asphalt section of our iconic main street scored a dismal 39 out of 100, landing it in the "Poor" category and the bottom 20% of all Sausalito roads.

This isn't just about aesthetics. Potholes, cracks, and uneven pavement create hazards for everyone – drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians alike. We deserve a Bridgeway that's smooth, safe, and worthy of our beautiful waterfront town.

What needs to be done?

Given the road size and level of deterioration on the stretch of Bridgeway, this isn't a quick or cheap fix. We're talking about a significant, costly project that includes:

  • Grinding: Removing the existing damaged road surface.

  • Repaving: Laying down fresh, smooth asphalt.

  • Restriping: Creating clear lanes and markings for all road users.

Where will the money come from?

While this type of work requires a significant investment from the city, there's good news! This project could be fully funded through grant programs specifically designed for improving roadway safety. By pursuing these grants, we can revitalize Bridgeway without straining our local budget.

Maintenance was routine in the past…

“Bridgeway gets new pavement every 14 years, with a slurrv seal done at the halfway point.” - Marin Scope 1986

Sausalito’s City Manager gave its road condition a poor grade .…

One thing that is certain is the condition of our basic infrastructure. Things that are important to people that walk, bike and drive is basic asphalt.  Sausalito’s road infrastructure is not a C average, it is actually closer to a D in terms of its pavement index management rating. - March 8, 2022 City Council Meeting - Video (1:20:38)

Let's make it happen!

A better Bridgeway benefits everyone. It's time to prioritize this vital project and ensure our main street is safe, functional, and beautiful for residents and visitors alike. Let's work together to make it happen!
